Obituary

Eleanor (Ellen) Norwood, age 83, of Monroe, MI passed away Sunday, January 25, 2009 at 5:33 PM at Mercy Memorial Hospital. Eleanor was born November 23, 1925 in Keyser, West Virginia the daughter of the late Paul H. and Ruby (Steiding) Shobe. On December 28, 1948 Eleanor married Robert J. Norwood at the United Methodist Church in Highland Park, MI. They had been married for 55 years when he passed away on September 8, 2004. Eleanor worked as a hostess 18 years at the "Eatery", formerly the "Harvest Table" restaurant in Monroe. She was an active member of the Mercy Memorial Hospital Guild volunteering primarily in the gift shop and was chairperson of the Guild Honor Guard. Eleanor also volunteered for many of the Guild special events to raise money for the hospital and patients. Eleanor was active as a life member of the Eastern Star #208 in Petersburg, MI, River Raisin Chapter and served as Past Noble Grand of the Monroe Rebekah #513 Chapter. Eleanor also served as the Monroe County Canvassing Board for the Democratic Party for many years, as well as working in Congressman John Dingell's Monroe office. She was a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Monroe and had attended there for over 50 years. Eleanor was a woman who was truly loved by all who knew her. Eleanor is survived by 2 sons; Robert Craig Norwood of Okemos, MI and Brad Lee Norwood of Monroe, her sister Ramona and Donald Himes of Washington Township, MI, her niece Kimberly and her nephew Daniel. In keeping with Eleanor's wishes there will no public viewing. Cremation will be held and a memorial service celebrating Eleanor's life will be held Sunday, February 22, 2009 at 2:00 PM at the 1st Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Dean and Ellen McGormley pastors of the church will officiate. The Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd. in Monroe, is handling the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to either Mercy Memorial Hospital or the 1st Presbyterian Church.
