Edward John Zubavich, age 79, of Monroe, MI passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 18, 2009 at 11:42 AM in the home of his nephew and niece John and Brenda Mason in Belleville, MI. Ed had been in declining health for the past year. Ed was born June 24, 1929 in Newton Falls, OH the son of the late Michael and Elizabeth (Victor) Zubavich. Ed's family moved to Monroe in 1935 from Newton Falls. Ed attended Monroe Public Schools and was a 1946 graduate of Monroe High School. Ed proudly served his country during the Korean War as a Sergeant in the US Marine Corps. For 30 years Ed worked as a Postal Carrier for the US Postal Service in Monroe, he retired on June 24, 1984. Ed attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in Monroe. Ed was a member of the American Legion post in Monroe and enjoyed fishing and photography. Ed is survived by his niece Elizabeth (Dallas) Hughes of Monroe, 4 nephews; Michael (Eva) Mason of Monroe, John (Brenda) Mason of Belleville, Joseph Mason of Monroe and Edward (Katrina) Mason of Monroe and several great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents Ed was preceded in death by his brother Joseph Zubavich and his sister Ann Mason. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 2-7 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd. in Monroe, where funeral services celebrating his life will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2009 at 11:00 AM. Fr. William Fisher pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Monroe will officiate. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Monroe where the VFW Post 1138 will conduct military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
