Donna Jane Cusumano, age 82 of Monroe, passed away Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at the IHM Senior Living Community.
Born July 15, 1941 in Monroe, Jane was the daughter of the late Robert and Dorothy (Luthy) Verhoeven. She graduated from St. Mary Academy in 1959 and attended Mary Manse and Marygrove Colleges, earning a bachelor degree in education. On November 25, 1966, she married Salvador "Sam" Cusumano at St. Mary Catholic Church.
Jane had a passion for teaching and education. Her career as a teacher included the Hall of Divine Child, St. Mary Academy, and SMCC High School. Collectively, she taught for 25 years before retiring in 1997.
Jane was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and Comboni Missionaries Ladies Auxiliary. She was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers and enjoyed tutoring, baking cookies, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Jane is survived by her husband Sam, former owner of Broadway Market in Monroe; three children, Vito Cusumano of Monroe, Kris (Chip) Neubar of Canton, MI, and Sam (Melissa) Cusumano, Jr. of Madison, WI; eight siblings, Sandra (Ed) Miskovic of Gilberts, IL, Sebastian (Gennie) Verhoeven of Simi, CA, Charles (Bernie) Verhoeven of Green Bay, WI, Thomas Verhoeven of Indianapolis, IN, Maria Verhoeven of Royal Oak, MI, Janice (Hod) Comstock of Tucson, AZ, Roberta (Bruce) Brenton of Monroe, and Dorothy (Mike) Jackowski of Monroe; four grandchildren, Olivia Cusumano, Sarah Neubar, Anna Cusumano, and Gianna Cusumano.
In addition to her parents, Jane was also preceded in death by a brother, Paul (Marci) Verhoeven, and a niece, Jennifer Verhoeven.
All are invited to attend a memorial visitation on Monday, Nov. 13th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Bacarella Funeral Home where the Rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. On Tuesday, a Memorial Mass will be celebrated at the SSIHM Motherhouse Chapel at 10 a.m. Private interment of her cremated remains will be at St. Joseph Cemetery at a later date.
