Donald M. Young, Jr., age 74 of Monroe, passed away Friday, May 26, 2023 at ProMedica Toledo Hospital. He had been in declining health for a year.
Born February 21, 1949 in Williamsport, PA, Don was the son of Donald and Rosemary (Steinbacher) Young. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on March 21, 1968 and served his country during the Vietnam War until being honorably discharged on December 5, 1969. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and RVN Campaign Medal.
Don married Mona "Mauna" J. Junkins on July 25, 1970 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Wyandotte, MI. He later married Nola S. King on May 13, 1989 at Erie United Methodist Church.
Don was employed by Ford Motor Company, Woodhaven Stamping Plant for over 37 years before retiring in 2006. He and his wife Nola Co-owned and operated Sweet Temptations Restaurant in Luna Pier from 2005-2008.
Don was a former member of Moose Lodge 884. He enjoyed woodworking, family barbeques, lawn work, collecting eagle figurines, watching western movies, deer hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family and friends.
Don is survived by his wife Nola; four children, Tina (Frank) Fodo of Southgate, MI, Regina Billmaier of Wyandotte, MI, Bradley (Amy) Mayberry of Pelzer, SC, and Courtney Banks of Toledo, OH; three siblings, Denny (Paula) Young of Stockbridge, MI, Kenny Young of Trenton, MI, and Jackie Cleere of Dayton, OH; nine grandchildren: E.J., Anthony, Frankie, Dylan, Summer, Katie, Meadow, Angel, and Lillian; one great-grandchild, Anastasia; and his pet dog, JoJo.
Don was preceded in death by his father, Donald Young, Sr.; mother, Rosemary Kennedy; step-father, Jack Kennedy; brother, Tim Young; four brothers-in-law, Jerry King, Clarence King, Donald King, and Robert King; and pet dog Snowball.
Family and friends may visit from 11 a.m. until time of funeral at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 3rd at Bacarella Funeral Home. Rev. Keith Hawes, pastor of Stewart Road Church of God will officiate in conjunction with military honors provided by Monroe VFW Post 1138. Cremation will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in accordance with his wishes.
