Donald R. Sammons, Sr., age 87, of Monroe, passed away Friday, October 27, 2023 at Beaumont Hospital, Trenton.
Donald was born October 9, 1936 in Firebrick, KY, he was the son of Thomas P. and Emma Jean (Jarrel) Sammons. He married Donna F. Ervin August 7, 1954.
An employment opportunity brought Don and Donna to Monroe in 1966. He then began his career at McLouth Steel, he stayed with the company until his retirement in 1996.
He was a member of First Christian Baptist Church. He enjoyed woodworking and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Don is survived by his wife of 69 years, Donna; six children, Richard (Sandy) Sammons of Monroe, Angie M. (Tony) White of Dundee, Samantha (Anthony) Cousino of Newport, Cindy Skaggs of Monroe, Bonnie Sammons of Oak Hill, OH and Connie (Terry) Lawson of Amherst, OH; a sister, Frieda Maddix of Firebrick, KY; thirteen grandchildren, Correy Rouse Zelenka, Shelby Sammons, Britney Cousino-Moore, Halle Sammons, Zakary Sharp, Emma Cousino, Charity Sammons, Jakob Sharp, Elizabeth Cousino, Harmonee Sammons, Anthony Cousino, Ella White and Alivia Sammons and seven great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, June J. Sammons and a brother, Jimmy Sammons.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 from 2 to 8 p.m. at Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., Monroe, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday. Pastor Mike Anson, of First Christian Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle.
