Clara L. "Dolly" Berns, age 94 of Monroe, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2023 at IHM Senior Living Community.
Born November 7, 1928 in Monroe, Dolly was the daughter of the late Morris and Lillian (Fountain) Newman. She attended Monroe Public Schools until her senior year before graduating from Chelsea High School in 1946. On September 10, 1948, she married Bob A. Berns in Monroe. Together they raised two daughters. He preceded her in death on October 13, 2017.
As a young lady while in high school, Dolly worked at the Family Theater and the Monroe Theater and then as an operator for Michigan Bell Telephone. After raising her children, Dolly was employed by the Monroe YMCA and Mercy Memorial Hospital as a medical biller.
For many years, Dolly was an active member of Calvary United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, worked as a secretary, and served as a Youth Leader. She was also instrumental in forming the Mother's Club at the former Memorial Hospital.
Dolly is survived by her two daughters, Bonnie (Steve) Thompson and Donna Cherba, both of Monroe; brother, Morris Newman of Monroe; three grandchildren, Sara Thompson, Rob (Amanda) Cherba, and Adam (Tanisha) Cherba; and one great-grandchild, Theodore Cherba.
In addition to her parents and husband, Dolly was preceded in death by granddaughter, Emily Thompson; brother, James (Sharon) Newman; sister, Milly Smith; son-in-law, Rob Cherba; and sisters-in-law, Lillie Newman and Mary Newman.
Family and friends may visit from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7th at Bacarella Funeral Home where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Rev. William Kreichbaum will officiate followed by burial at Roselawn Memorial Park.
