Charles J. Meyers, 86 years, of Monroe, MI became absent from the body and present with the Lord on Friday, February 18, 2011 at 3:00 PM at Mercy Memorial Hospital.
Born March 2, 1924 in Monroe, MI, Charles was the son of the late Charles H. and Elizabeth (McMillian) Meyers. Charles was educated at Boyd School and was a 1943 graduate of Monroe High School. He went on to attend Wayne State University in Detroit.
Charles served our country honorably and proudly as a Tech Corporal in the US Army during WWII in the Pacific Theater, specifically New Guinea, Luzon, and the Southern Philippines. For his heroism he was awarded the Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Battle Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Battle Star and 3 Overseas Service Bars.
Charles married the former Beverly Cook, Beverly passed away suddenly in 1961 at a young age. Charles then married his beloved wife the former Ruby L. (Hensley) Alston on December 12, 1964 at the First Presbyterian Church in Monroe.
Charles was employed by Ford Motor Company for 30 years, retiring as a receiving clerk on August 1, 1980. For 26 years Charles volunteered at the Monroe County Youth Home working with the kids, where he was known as the "Treat Man".
Charles is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Ruby, 3 children; Holly Ann (Ken) Carey of Bear, DE, Reginald E. Meyers of Monroe and Robert D. Alston of OR., and 1 brother; James P. (Marlene) Meyers of Ishpeming, MI. In addition to his parents and first wife Beverly, Charles was preceded in death by 1 brother Richard Meyers.
In keeping with his wishes visitation and services will be private. Private interment services will be held under the direction of the VFW Post 1138.
The Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., in Monroe, 734-241-4600 is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
