Charles Sumner McIntyre, III, 98 years, passed away peacefully, Monday, July 13, 2026, at his Monroe, Michigan home.
Born August 11, 1927, in Monroe, Charlie was the son of the late Brouwer D. and Jane E. (Mitchell) McIntyre. He attended Boyd Elementary School and was a 1945 graduate of Monroe High School where he played football and tennis. His other extra-curricular activities included; stage manager for theatrical performances and playing the role of Jonathan Brewster in the play “Arsenic and Old Lace”. Charlie attended the University of Michigan and the Coast Guard Academy. He received the University of Michigan Alumni Graduate of the Year Award for his scholarships, sports, and other extra-curricular activities.
On October 23, 1948, Charlie married his beloved wife, the former Irma A. McLaughlin, at Zion Lutheran Church in Monroe. Sadly, she preceded him in death on March 17, 2016, after 67 years of marriage.
Charlie began working as the Service Manager at Monroe Auto Equipment in 1949, in 1964 he was elevated to Executive Vice President and Treasurer of the company. In 1973 Charlie became the President of Monroe Auto Equipment Company, a position he held until his retirement in January of 1978. After retirement Charlie became an Asset Manager / Broker for the Ohio Company’s Monroe office, a job he held until 1983 when he and Irma decided to move to Florida.
From a young age, it was instilled in Charlie to always give back to the community. He was always giving his time and talent where needed. He served on the Vestry at Trinity Episcopal Church, was active in Masonry, and helped with many non-profit fund raisers, including but not limited to the YMCA and Mercy Memorial Hospital. He was a Trustee for many years at Hillsdale College where he served as Chair of the Investment Committee and the Building Committee and Vice Chair of the Finance Committee. He also served on the Executive Committee, the Nominating Committee and Board of Directors of the Hibiscus Children’s Center in Stuart Florida. He was a member of the Automotive Hall of Fame, the Sailfish Point Golf Club, and the Monroe Golf and Country Club. He served as the Executive Director of the Jane and B.D. McIntyre Foundation, served on the board of directors for Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery, and CASA in Monroe. Charlie was a busy man his entire life, but he always made time for family.
Charlie is survived by his three loving daughters: Martha (Stan) Gilchrist, Marjorie (Gary Evans) McIntyre, and Susan (John) Cervini, five cherished grandchildren: Chad (Alison) Gilchrist, Elizabeth Noe, David (Stephaney) Noe, Alexandra (Christian) Mull and Katelyn Cervini, six treasured great grandchildren, three sisters: Marjorie Hohman, Lydia Barnes, and Mary Anne Gettel, and a special friend, Joyce Court.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 19, 2026 from 2-5 pm at Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd. Monroe, Michigan, 48161. On Monday, July 20, 2026, he will lie instate at Trinity Episcopal Church, 304 S. Monroe Street, Monroe, Michigan, 48161, beginning at 10:00 am where funeral services celebrating Charlie’s life will begin at 11:00 am, the Rev. James M. Bischoff, will officiate. Entombment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.
