Catherine Dickson "Kay" Quick, 89 years of Monroe, MI passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2007 at 2:11 PM in Mercy Memorial Hospital where she had been since Saturday. Kay had been in poor health for 14 months. Kay was born February 14, 1918 in Helena, Arkansas, the daughter of the late Dr. Thomas Luther and Jemima (Wenley) Purdom. Kay was a 1934 graduate of University High School in Ann Arbor, MI. In 1938, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan, and in 1973 she received her Master of Arts degree from Slippery Rock University in Slippery Rock, PA. On December 28, 1940, Kay married George Stern Quick at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Ann Arbor. A homemaker and educator, Kay taught soldiers in Germany in 1948. From 1964-66 she taught conversational English to Brazilian Army wives in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She also taught at the American School in Rio de Janeiro, 1967-68, and the American School in Recife, Brazil, 1970-72. She taught English at Slippery Rock University from 1972 until her retirement in 1982. Kay wrote a column for the Monroe Guardian called "Sin and Syntax". Kay was an active member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Monroe, where she served on the Vestry, taught Sunday school, was on the Altar Guild, and was a member of the Episcopal Church Women. Kay was a member of Alpha Lambda Delta honor society and the Collegiate Sorosis Sorority. Other memberships included: life member of the Monroe County Historical Society, a Rotary Paul Harris Foundation fellow, Friends in Council, Lotus Garden Club, University of Michigan President's Club and the National Scholar Society. In 1988, Kay received the Citation of Honor from the Greater Michigan Foundation. Kay is survived by her beloved husband George, 4 loving children; William Hudson (Day) Quick of Maputo, Mozambique; Catherine (Michael) Sniderman of Murfreesboro, TN; Dr. Mary McWhorter Quick of Berkeley, CA; and Rev, Dr. Anne Wenley (James Ross) Quick of Tweed, Ontario, and 8 cherished grandchildren. Cremation will take place and a memorial service will be held at a later date. The Bacarella Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
