Obituary

Bonnie Zula Schmidt, 86 years, of LaSalle, Michigan, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, in her home.
Born February 21, 1936 in Middlesboro, KY, Bonnie was the daughter of the late Farlin and Bessie (Arnold) Swanson. The family moved to Michigan in 1937. Bonnie attended Keeney Elementary School in Erie.
On December 19, 1953, Bonnie married her beloved husband, Herbert L. Schmidt, at the First Presbyterian Church in Erie. Sadly, he preceded her in death on July 19, 2009, after 55 years of marriage.
Bonnie was a member of many churches in Monroe County, LaSalle Missionary Baptist, Suder Avenue Baptist, and Frenchtown Missionary Baptist. She also visited Union Street Missionary Baptist Church with her friend Rosie Duncan and Petersburg Baptist Church with Alice Lowery. She along with her husband had a winter home in Bellview, FL where they enjoyed going to flea markets on a weekly basis. She also enjoyed garage sales and quilting. Bonnie was a wonderful homemaker and loved time spent with family.
Bonnie is survived by two loving daughters: Kim B. (Robert) Hacker of Monroe and Penny L. (Patrick) Emerson of LaSalle, four cherished grandchildren: Jessica Hacker, Casey (Thanasis) Minton, Taryn (Jeremy) Minton, and Kenneth (Lindsay) Emerson, two treasured great granddaughters: Arionna (Harmon) Lee, Sia Androutsopoulos, with another on the way, two adored great great grandchildren: Hayden and Kai Lee and four sisters: Betty Babcock of Monroe, Clara Warner-Lommerse of LaSalle, Bernetia Baldwin of Temperance, and Wanita "Pat" Brown of Monroe.
In addition to her husband and parents, Bonnie was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Angela Hacker Stokes on January 28, 2021, a son in law, Rick Hacker, four brothers: Jim Dunn, Alfred Dunn, Doyle Jones, and Leonard Swanson, and two sisters: Ruth Chittum and Anita Swanson.
Visitation will be held on Monday, February 28, 2022 from 11:00 am at Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., Monroe, Michigan, 48161, where funeral services celebrating Bonnie's life will begin at 2:00 pm. Private interment will be held at LaSalle Township Cemetery.
