Betty L. Ooley

Betty L. Ooley, 85 years, of Newport, Michigan, passed away Monday, June 30, 2014 at Mercy Memorial Hospital in Monroe, Michigan. She had been in declining health for two years. Born October 25, 1928 in Sharps Chapel, Tennessee, Betty was the daughter of the late Luna and Ella (Johnson) Sharp. Betty graduated high school in Maynardville, Tennessee and received her bachelor’s degree from Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee. Betty went on to further her education and received her master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. On July 21, 1962 Betty married Roy J. Ooley at St. Anne’s Catholic Church. Betty began her career by teaching first grade in a one room school house in Sharps Chapel, Tennessee, where she taught for seven years. Betty then began teaching for Jefferson Public Schools where she taught first grade for 30 years. She retired from Sodt Elementary School in 1987. A member of St. Charles Catholic Church in Newport, Betty enjoyed shopping with her daughter, eating out with her husband and sticking up for her son in law. She also enjoyed visiting with family and friends in Tennessee. Most of all Betty loved being with her grandson Cole. Betty is survived by her beloved husband of 51 years, Roy, her loving daughter and son in law: Beth A. and Eric Glenn of Monroe, a cherished grandson: Cole M. Glenn, two sisters: Liva (Audley “Squirt”) Mitchell of Maynardville, TN, and JoAnn Ellison of Tazewell, TN and a brother Mike Sharp of TN. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by a brother: C.B. Sharp, and two sisters: Beadie Sharp and Sarah Russell. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2014 from 2-8 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., Monroe, MI, 48161 where funeral services celebrating her life will be held that evening at 6:00 PM. The Rev. Roy Southerland will officiate. Private burial will be held at St. Joseph Cemetery in Monroe. Memorial contributions are suggested to Penrickton Center for Blind Children, 26530 Eureka Rd, Taylor, MI 48180 or to a charity of the donor’s choice. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and aids at Mercy Memorial Hospital for their compassionate care.
