Barbara E. Sontag of Monroe, 87, passed peacefully Monday at Hampton Manor in Dundee. The dedicated mother and grandmother battled several health issues over the past several years.
Barb was survived by her three sons – Gary (Wendy), Dave (Michelle) and Steve (Dawn), along with eight grandchildren – Ryan, Susan, Brendan, Phillip, Paul, Kristen, Morgan and Nick. Barb was also blessed with 10 great grandchildren.
Born October 23, 1935, in Monroe, Barb was a 1953 graduate of Monroe High School. She married her high school sweetheart, Lavern Sontag, in 1955. After attending The University of Toledo to earn an associate degree as a radiologic technologist, Barb worked at St. Luke's Hospital in Toledo. Once she started her family, Barb served as a homemaker for most of her life. She was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Monroe. She also volunteered her time at Zion Lutheran School where her children were enrolled. Attending her children's sporting events were focal points in her life.
Twenty years of her life was spent at Canadian Lakes in Mecosta. Barb enjoyed gardening, baking, cooking, bowling and playing cards. Barb was also a Detroit Tigers' follower and an avid reader. She volunteered at God's Helping Hands in Remus. While at Canadian Lakes, Barb was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Remus.
Barb's memory will forever be treasured by those who knew and loved her. Her radiant smile, her kind heart and her incessant love for her family and friends will be cherished by everyone. In her afterlife, Barb joins her husband, Lavern, her mother, Elizabeth Yoas, her stepfather, Ervin Yoas, her son, Paul, and her sister, Aurelie Conn.
The family wishes to thank Careline Health Group for its Hospice care and Hampton Manor personnel for its constant personal touch.
In accordance with Barb's wishes, cremation has been arranged through Bacarella Funeral Home. A memorial visitation is scheduled for Saturday, September 9 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the funeral home where services will be held at 12 p.m.
Close friend and family member, Rev. Dan Bowman, pastor of Swartz Creek United Methodist Church, will officiate. All are welcome to visit and share memories of Barb.
