Aubrey Ray Goins Sr. age 89 of Monroe, MI passed away Saturday, November 4, 2006 at 9:05 PM in Mercy Memorial Hospital where he had been since Tuesday. Ray had been in poor health for 5 years. Ray was born March 5, 1917 in Claiborne County, TN. the son of the late David and Cora Eve (Ledger) Goins. Ray moved to Monroe in 1937. Ray served his country during WWII from January 14, 1941 until November 30, 1945 in the US Army's 9th Airborne Division. Ray received his basic training at Camp Eulin, Texas. Ray served in the Pacific Theater specifically in the campaigns of Luzon and New Guinea. Ray received the following for his bravery; The Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, American Defense Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, Unit Citation and the WW II Victory Medal. On November 19, 1945 Ray married Ruth Simpson in Monroe. Ray worked as a papermaker for Union Camp in Monroe for 30 years, retiring on July 1, 1978. Ray attended 1st Wesleyan Church in Monroe. Ray was a Life Member of the VFW Post 1138. He was a former member of the Monroe County Rod and Gun Club. He enjoyed hunting and shooting. Ray is survived by his beloved wife Ruth, 4 loving children; Aubrey Ray (Nancy) Goins Jr. of LaSalle, MI, Ronnie DeWayne (Barbara) Dophal of Ida, MI, Elizabeth Ann (Bill) Thornhill of Lebanon, TN. and Margaret Ann (Ernie) Goodman of Monroe, MI. 10 cherished grandchildren and 16 cherished great grandchildren. In addition to his parents Ray was preceded in death by his son Dennis Lee Goins on February 12, 1977, 1 sister and 4 brothers. Visitation for Ray will be held on Monday from 5-9 PM and Tuesday from 1-9 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home where services celebrating his life will be held Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at 11:00 AM. The Rev. Jeffrey Luttrell pastor of 1st Wesleyan Church will officiate. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park under the auspices of VFW Post 1138.
