Obituary

Arthur L. Miller, age 97 of Monroe, passed away Tuesday, January 30, 2024 at Wellspring Lutheran Home.
Born September 1, 1926 in Monroe, Arthur was the son of the late Arthur S. and Florence M. (Boehm) Miller. After graduating from Monroe High School in 1944, he proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army. He served from October 1, 1946 until being honorably discharged from active duty on April 13, 1948. He obtained the rank of Staff Seargent and received the WWII Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal, Japan.
Four years later, Arthur married Phyllis J. Muehleisen on June 3, 1952 at Grace Lutheran Church. Together they raised five children. She preceded him in death on August 28, 2015.
Arthur began his working career in his youth as a paperboy for the Monroe Evening News. He then went to work at the former Heck's Market in Monroe as a delivery person and later as a meat cutter. Afterward, he began a 30 year career as a sales person for Ohio China Company, retiring in 1987.
Arthur was a life member of Grace Lutheran Church where he taught Sunday School for 50 years, served as Chairman of its Finance Committee, sang in the choir, was active in its Men's Club, and was known for making soup for countless church luncheons.
Arthur was also a proud blood donor, donating over 25 gallons during his lifetime. He gave for the 201st time on his 91st birthday. He enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, collecting "stuff", and never turned down an opportunity to play euchre.
Arthur is survived by four children, Paul (Mary) Miller of Carleton, Susan Miller of Monroe, Sharon Bouy of Gretna, LA, and Julie (Wayne) Waldecker of Newport; six grandchildren: Stephanie (Matt Breitner) Miller, Conrad (Emily) Miller, Andrew (Sarah) Miller, Sarah (Jeff Harris) Miller, Magdalene Waldecker, and Ashley Waldecker; five great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Glenda Rouland of St. Charles, MO; and two nephews, Rev. Mark (Megan) Rouland and Craig (Jenn) Rouland.
In addition to his parents and wife, Arthur was preceded in death by a daughter, Vickie J. Miller; son-in-law, Lyle Bouy; brother-in-law, Thomas Rouland; and niece, Karen Rouland.
Family and friends may visit from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5th at Bacarella Funeral Home. Arthur will lie in state Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church where services will begin at 11 a.m. The church pastor, Rev. Mark Witte will officiate followed by burial at Roselawn Memorial Park with military honors provided by Monroe VFW Post 1138.
For anyone wishing to make a donation in memory of Arthur, the family suggests supporting Grace Lutheran Church, Wellspring Lutheran Home, or a charity of the donor's choice.
The family wishes to thank the caring staff at Wellspring Lutheran Home and Elara Hospice for the compassionate care they provided. In addition, they would like to thank the members of the weekly euchre game that Arthur looked forward to for many years.
