Almira K. "Sis" Sortor, 63 years, of Monroe, MI went home to be with the Lord on Friday, May 11, 2012 at 8:41 PM in her home with her family at her side and under the tender care of Mercy Memorial Hospice of Monroe. Sis had courageously battled cancer for the past 14 years.
Born November 2, 1948 in Middlesboro, KY, Sis was the daughter of the late Frank and Minnie (Farmer) Standifer. Sis was a 1966 graduate of Monroe High School.
On May 6, 1967, Sis married her best friend and the love of her life Gary C. Sortor at Fourth Street Church of God.
Sis was employed as a food service worker and cook for the I.S.D., Waterloo, Christiancy, Manor, and Custer Schools in Monroe over the past 28 years. Sis enjoyed going to work, as she truly loved all the children and her co workers.
Sis was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church. She enjoyed golfing, shooting pool, bowling, trips to the casino, shopping and traveling. Sis and Gary spent many days camping during the summer in Wauseon, OH. Sis also enjoyed playing, managing and watching softball. She especially enjoyed watching her grandchildren's sporting events. Sis was a fun loving, wonderful person who picked up the nickname "Sissy Go Go" because she could never sit still. Most of all Sis loved her family.
Sis is survived by her beloved husband of 45 years, Gary, two loving children: Bryan K. (Kathie) Sortor and Lisa D. Sortor both of Monroe, six cherished grandchildren: Kiara, Alexis, Imari, Bailey, Bryan and Brooke, four sisters: Yvonne (Charles) Nocella of Monroe, Joyce Hellenberg of Glasgow, KY, Frankie (Roger) Kerkenbush of Monroe, Reba (Mike) Maloney of Pismo Beach, CA, a sister in law Rena Standifer of Holland, MI, and three brothers: Bill (Dianna) Standifer of Monroe, Colin (Edie) Standifer of Dayton, OH and John (Donna) Standifer of Flat Rock, MI. In addition to her parents, Sis was preceded in death by a brother Gary.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 1-8 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home where funeral services celebrating her life will be held on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at 11:00 AM. The Rev. William Kreichbaum will officiate. Interment will follow at Rath Cemetery.
