Stephen C. Thompson

Stephen C. Thompson, age 74, of Monroe, passed away Saturday, May 20, 2023 in his home. Steve was born December 22, 1948 in Monroe, he was the son of Ralph and Ruth (Cooley) Thompson. He married Bonnie Berns in 1971 in Calvary EUB Church in Monroe, where they had first met in Sunday School as children. He was a 1967 graduate of Monroe High School. He continued his education earning an associate degree at Monroe County Community College and a bachelor’s degree from Wayne State University. Steve proudly served his country in the US Army from 1968 until his honorable discharge in 1970. While in service he was stationed in Germany. He worked for many years for Ford Motor Company in both Woodhaven and Wixom; retiring in 1999. He then worked for Gentex Corporation for several years. Steve was a current member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. He enjoyed camping with the “Apple Dumpling Gang”, fishing in all seasons, baking and cooking, wood carving and woodturning and doing anything outdoors. He also loved to travel to the “Place Up North” in West Branch, MI. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Bonnie A. Thompson; his daughter, Sara Thompson; sister, Bonnie J. Thompson; sisters-in-law, Marta Thompson and Donna Cherba; nephews, David Thompson, Rob Cherba and Adam Cherba and their families. He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Emily Thompson; brother, Ron Thompson; father and mother-in-law, Bob and Dolly Berns; brother-in-law, Rob Cherba and nephew, Doug Thompson. Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 24, 2023 from 2 to 8 p.m. at Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Road, Monroe, where visitation will continue Thursday at 10 a.m. until funeral services at 11 a.m. Rev. William Kreichbaum will officiate. Military honors will be performed by VFW Post 1138, Monroe. Steve had been very active in the Batten Disease Support and Research Association (BDSRA), especially the traveling memorial, and support group for fathers.
