Joyce M. Opfermann

April 12, 1928 - October 9, 2020

Joyce M. Opfermann, 92, of Kalamazoo Michigan, formerly of Monroe went home to be with the Lord on Friday, October 9, 2020, at Friendship Village Senior Living Community. Born April 12, 1928 in Ann Arbor, she was the daughter of the late Otto and Ruth (Hertler) Bredernitz. Joyce was a 1946 graduate of Ann Arbor High School. She attended Eastern Michigan University earning her Bachelor of Science Degree in education in 1950 and later her Master’s Degree. While at EMU she was a member of Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority. Joyce married her beloved husband Stanley Opfermann on August 28, 1954 in Monroe. Joyce was an elementary school teacher for Jefferson Public Schools for 43 years, retiring in 1993. She was also a member of Americas Association of University Women. Joyce loved spending time with her four adored grandchildren. She also enjoyed quilting, traveling when she could, and volunteering for various organizations. To cherish her memory, Joyce leaves her husband Stanley, two children, Mark (Jenny) Opfermann of Muskegon and Amy (Dale) Anderson of Dundee; and four grandchildren Danielle (Jeremiah) Bersche, Andrew Anderson, Luke Opfermann and Nathan Opfermann. In addition to her parents, Joyce is preceded in death by her daughter, Ann Opfermann, her son, David Opfermann; and four siblings, Willard Bredernitz, Duane Bredernitz, Don Bredernitz and Joann Roos. Visitation will be held from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 14, 2020, at Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 South Telegraph Road, Monroe, MI 48161. Services celebrating her life will begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2020, also at Bacarella Funeral Home. Rev. Wayne Butts, of Christ Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial is to follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Joyce’s memory are suggested to the Jefferson Scholarship Fund.
