Janet H. Bitz

Janet H. Bitz, 91, of Monroe went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 1, 2018. She had been in declining health for two years. Born January 22, 1927 in Monroe, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Cora (Whittkop) Schmidt. Janet attended Monroe High School, graduating with the class of 1944. She worked for H.J. Reisig and Son Tailors from 1942 until 1952 as their bookkeeper. Janet married her beloved husband, Arthur G. Bitz, on February 11, 1950 at Trinity Lutheran Church. Sadly, he preceded her in death on May 23, 2016. Janet was a lifelong member of Grace Lutheran Church, where she was the Treasurer of the Altar Guild for more than twenty years. She was also the Treasurer for the Monroe High School Band Boosters for more than twelve years. Janet enjoyed sewing, reading and traveling with her husband to various historical sites and landmarks. More than anything, she loved spending time with her family and greatly adored her grandchildren. To cherish her memory, Janet leaves two daughters, Gail (Joseph) Caleca of Mount Pleasant, Michigan and Lori L. Bitz of Toledo, Ohio; and three grandchildren: Christina (Josh) Formeller, Michael Caleca and Katelynn Caleca. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Gary Bitz in 1997. Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 8, 2018, at Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Road, Monroe, MI, 48161, from 4 PM until 7 PM. She will lie in state at 10:30 AM, Friday, November 9, 2018, at Grace Lutheran Church, 630 N. Monroe Street, Monroe, MI, 48162, where services will be held at 11:30 AM. Rev. Mark Witte, Pastor of the church, will officiate. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle. Memorial contributions in Janet’s memory are suggested to Grace Lutheran Church Sunday School Program.
