William Lawrence Toburen

William L. (Larry) Toburen, 88, a lifelong resident of Monroe, Michigan, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at the Wellspring Lutheran Home in Monroe Michigan. He leaves his beloved wife of 67 years, Eileen (Ney) Toburen, two loving children: Paula (David) Diehl and Paul (Nancy) Toburen; six cherished grandchildren: Tyler, Chelsea and Natalie Toburen, Dustin, Derrick and Sean Bussell, four treasured great grandchildren and countless friends. Preceded in death by a son: Mark Toburen and a grandson: Chad Bussell. Born May 14, 1926 in Monroe Michigan he was the son of the late William and Edna (Mulhollen) Toburen. After graduating from Monroe High School, Larry served in the United States Navy stationed in the Philippines during the final days of World War II. Upon leaving the Navy, he took at position at Detroit Edison where he retired in 1987 after 39 years of service. During this time he continued his education at Monroe County Community College and Eastern Michigan University. He is a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, where he served as usher, and on the building committee, he also served as a Eucharistic Minister and sang in the Resurrection Choir. Larry was a member of the Monroe Township Volunteer Fire Department for 26 years where he served as Captain and Assistant Fire Chief. He was on the Monroe Township Planning Commission, where he served for over 31 years, which is the longest tenure of any member. Other memberships include the Knights of Columbus, the V.F.W. Post 1138 in Monroe and various other volunteer organizations. He will always be known as a compassionate husband, father and friend who had a big heart and was always willing to help those in need. His legacy and memories will continue to live on with all who knew him. Visitation will be held on Friday from 1-8 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., Monroe, MI, 48161 where a Scripture Service, lead by Deacon Michael Stewart, will be held that evening at 6:30 PM. On Saturday, April 18, 2015 he will lie in state at St. John The Baptist Catholic Church in Monroe from 10:00 AM until mass of the Resurrection celebrating his life at 11:00 AM. Fr. James Smalarz, pastor of the church, will officiate. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. John The Baptist Catholic Church.
