Robert A. "Bob" Mclaughlin

Robert A. "Bob" McLaughlin, 84, of Carleton, passed away at Elderly Solutions, surrounded by his loving family, on Thursday, July 6, 2017. He was born October 22, 1932 in Carleton, to Harold and Dorothy (Sachse) McLaughlin. Sadly, they preceded him in death. Bob married his loving wife Nancy K. Miller, on December 27, 1952 at the Zion Lutheran Church, and she survives. He was a 1951 graduate of Airport High School, where he lettered in 3 sports. He went on to serve our country in the US Air Force from 1952-56, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. He taught Jet Mechanics, but the part he loved most was playing on the Air Force baseball team, traveling the country playing ball. Bob was a 36 year employee of Michigan Bell Telephone/Ameritech, working as a repairman/installer/testman, retiring in 1986. He was a very active member of the Flat Rock Church of Christ, serving as an usher. He was elected and served on the Carleton Village Council for many years, where he also was named the Carleton Citizen of the Year in 1990. Bob will be remembered as a lifelong athlete, he enjoyed playing basketball, football, baseball, bowling, golfing, and softball. He coached several men's and women's teams over the years, and was even selected as All World Coach of the Year at the World Tournament in 1983. He was very proud of the fact that he and his daughter, Lori, were the first father and daughter duo to play baseball together at the Detroit Tigers Fantasy Camp in Lakeland, Florida. Bob leaves many great stories and memories, and will surely be missed by all those who knew and loved him. Bob leaves to cherish his memory his wife of almost 65 years, Nancy; children, Christy (William) Derry of Ida, Lori (Sharon Verduzco) McLaughlin of Monroe, Scott (Pricilla Ridner) McLaughlin of Carleton, and Jeffrey (Peg) McLaughlin of Monroe; sister, Shirley Morris; 10 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren. As well as his parents, his sister, Betty Roberts, brother-in-laws, George Morris and Irwin Roberts, and great grandson, Liam Eby, all preceded him in death. Friends are invited to join the family at the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 South Telegraph Road, for visitation from 1-8 PM Sunday, where services will be held on Monday at 11 AM, with military services conducted by the VFW Post #1138. Burial will follow at Ash Cemetery in Carleton. For those wishing to make a memorial donation in his name the Alzheimer's Association of Michigan is suggested.
