Richard A. Chesney

Richard A. Chesney, 89 years, a lifelong resident of Monroe, Michigan, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at the IHM Health Care Center. Born November 17, 1926 in Monroe, Dick was the son of the late Arnold and Dorothy (Clark) Chesney. Dick was a 1944 graduate of Monroe High School where he was on the swim team and was the state runner-up in the freestyle event. He received his Bachelor's of Engineering from Michigan State University in 1948. On June 26, 1948 Dick married his beloved wife, the former Violet M. Clark, in Monroe. Sadly, she preceded him in death on January 19, 1985 after 36 years of marriage. Dick served his country honorably and proudly as a Private in the United States Army. He received the World War II Victory Medal. Dick was employed as an electrical engineer by Ford Motor Company working at both the Monroe and Rouge Plant. He retired in 1983. Dick was a member of Frenchtown Senior Citizens and the American Legion. He was also a member of the YMCA where he served on the board as the grounds committee chair. He enjoyed playing Bridge, watching his grandchildren play sports, and vacationing with his family. Dick was a jack of all trades and spent much of his retired time fixing and repairing things around the house. He was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers and Michigan State University Athletics. Most of all he enjoyed time spent with family. Dick is survived by two loving children: Gregory R. (Cindy) Chesney and Gail M. (Michael) McCormick both of Monroe, two cherished grandchildren: Jeff (Jessie) Chesney and Ryan (Krissy) Chesney, four treasured great grandchildren: Emerson, Hadley, Ben, and Allison, a step-brother: Dave Chesney of New Tazewell, TN, a step sister: Barbara (Chuck) Hehl, of Monroe a sister-in-law: Marjorie (Paul) Vensel of Monroe and a brother-in-law: David (Jane) Clark of Grosse Pointe Farms, MI, and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Sunday, from 2-7 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., Monroe, MI, 48161. On Monday, April 11, 2016 he will lie in state from 10:30 AM at St. John The Baptist Catholic Church in Monroe until Mass of the Resurrection celebrating his life at 11:00 AM. Fr. James Smalarz and Deacon Mike Stewart will be the celebrants. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, St. John The Baptist Catholic Church or The YMCA of Monroe.
