Renee M. Smith

Renee M. Smith, age 73 of Tecumseh, MI, passed away Tuesday, September 20, 2022 in Monroe. Born December 9, 1948 in Toledo, OH, Renee was the daughter of Clifford and Norma (Lester) Smith. She graduated from St. Mary Academy in 1967 and attended Monroe County Community College and Lansing Community College. During high school she volunteered as a Candy Striper at Monroe Hospital and also volunteered as a camp counselor in Irish Hills on Washington Lake. Renee had a long working career in the judicial system. In Lansing she was employed for 24 years as a clerk and criminal supervisor for the 54-A District Court. She then worked an additional 25 years in the Civil Department for the 55th District Court in Mason. During that time, with her friend Sherry, she purchased Hideaway Cove, a five unit resort in Tipton on Evans Lake. After selling the business years later, she bought a condo along the Raisin River in Tecumseh. Renee embraced the friendships made at the resort and enjoyed exercising and teaching aerobic dancing. Her work-outs continued through the pandemic via Zoom and YouTube with her friend Prudie. She loved her family and enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s many activities and watching them fish. Renee was an active member of the Irish Hills Regional Chamber of Commerce, serving as an ambassador. She also served on the board of Oh These Irish Hills!, a non-profit group interested in the revitalization and restoration of the Irish Hills area. Renee is survived by two sons and five grandchildren: Damon (Julie) Murphy of Grand Blanc and their children, Alayna and Brianna; Bryan (Kacia) Murphy of Milford and their children, Cole, Brady and Molly; four siblings: Judith Roberts of Summerfield, FL, Jacquelyn (David) Steinman of Monroe, Charlene (John) Moyers of Harrison, and William (Cheryl) Smith of Maybee. Renee was preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law, Dick Roberts. Renee wishes to thank her siblings for all the love and support given to her along with the staff of ProMedica hospice. Family and friends may visit from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26th at Bacarella Funeral Home. At 4 p.m., Deacon Mike Stewart of St. Mary Catholic Church will lead a service in celebration of Renee’s life. Cremation will follow with interment at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests supporting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or ProMedica Hospice.
