Norma K. Smith

Norma K. Smith, 96 years, of Monroe, Michigan, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 4, 2017 at Fountain View of Monroe under the tender care of Promedica Hospice. Norma, the third daughter born on December 13, 1920 from the union of the late Crandall D and Faye R. (Hibbard) Lester. Norma was raised on their farm in Ohio, with her three sisters and one brother. All are deceased except for her youngest sister, Mary Lynn (Vern) Landberg, who lives in Minnesota Norma attended and graduated from Gorham Fayette School. Norma was married to Peter George Nachtrieb, who was killed a few days after D-Day during W.W.II. She raised their daughter Judy in Adrian, MI. After the war, Norma married Clifford J. Smith on July 13, 1945 at Sacred Heart Catholic church in Hudson, Michigan. They moved to Perrysburg, Ohio and became owners of Young’s Ice Cream Store. After twelve years, they sold the business and moved to Monroe, Michigan where her husband was a salesman for Sunshine Biscuit Company. Norma worked for Monroe County Library for twenty years from 1964 to 1984 starting as school bookmobile librarian, than as the community bookmobile librarian. Norma loved mother nature, enjoyed the adventure of glide flying, hot air ballooning, kayaking, traveling, reading and playing cards with her neighbors and friends and especially doing things with her children. (Busy person wasn’t I?) Norma was preceded in death by her both of her husbands, her parents; a great grandson Craig, two sisters: Melba & Margaret, a brother: Jack and a son in law: Dick Roberts. She leaves to cherish her memory her children; Judy D. Roberts of Summerfield, FL, Jackie M. (David) Steinman of Monroe, MI, Renee Maria Smith of Irish Hills, MI, Charlene A. (John) Moyers of Harrison, MI, and William C. (Cheryl) Smith of Maybee, MI, seven grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and one great great grandson. Norma was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held Friday, from 4-8 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., Monroe, MI 48161, where funeral services celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at 11:00 AM. The Rev. Evans C. Bentley, pastor of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, will officiate. Private interment will be held at Pleasantview Union Cemetery in Fayette, OH. Memorials are suggested to Promedica Hospice, 5577 Monroe Street, Sylvania, OH 43560 or St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Monroe.
