John Joseph Castiglione

John Joseph Castiglione, 91, of Monroe passed away, surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday, June 19, 2016 in Fountainview of Monroe. He was born March 11, 1925 in Monroe to Vincent James and Phillipina (Camarasana) Castiglione and attended Monroe Public Schools. He proudly served our country in the US Army, enlisting October 2, 1943. He served in Germany, France, Holland, and Luxemburg while part of General George S. Patton's 3rd Army. He was awarded medals for EAME Theater, Bronze Medal, Expert Rifleman, Good Conduct, and the Victory Medal. He received his Honorable Discharge January 24, 1946. On July 27th, 1946, at St. Joseph Parish, he married Mary Joann Pancone, and she survives. He was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and a current member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. While at St. Joseph he was very active, serving in the Usher Club, on the parish Council, and helped with the church festival. He will be remembered as being a very devout Detroit Tiger fan, and enjoying gardening and bread making. He operated the family business, Castiglione Plastering, with his brother, Vincent, for 39 years, retiring in 1985. He leaves to cherish all the good memories, his devoted wife of almost 70 years, Mary; loving children, Vincent James (Jean) Castiglione, Phyllis (Ken) McLaughlin, John P. (Laura) Castiglione, and Dean (Kelly) Castiglione; beloved grandchildren, Maribeth (Jeffrey) Webb, John J. (Maureen) Castiglione, Angela Kosa, Maria Niekirk, Allison Castiglione, Andrew Castiglione, Jeanea (Joe) Carter, and Tyler Castiglione; Nine treasured Great Grandchildren, Sara, Christian, Joshua, Nieko, Colleen, Faith, Cedric, Sydney, and Garrett; his sister, Leona (Barney) Nilo; and sister-in-law, Pat Castiglione. Sadly, his parents, brother, Vincent, and daughter-in-law, Sara Castiglione all preceded him in death. Friends are invited to call from 1-8 PM Tuesday at the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 South Telegraph, where a scripture service will be held that day at 5 PM. He will Lie in State beginning at 9:30 AM Wednesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church until his Mass of the Resurrection begin at 10:30 AM. Fr. James Smalarz, pastor of the church will officiate, and burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery under the Auspices of the VFW, Post #1138, Monroe.
