Desmond P. DeFigueiredo

Desmond Peter DeFigueiredo went to be with the Lord on Friday, September 29th 2017. He was a tenacious fighter through his ten-year battle with both Parkinson’s Disease and cancer; never complaining, making the most of each day, and retaining his infectious sense of humor. He passed peacefully in his home surrounded by loving family. Born on January 28, 1938 in Georgetown, Guyana, Desmond was the son of the late Dionysius DeFigueiredo and Dorothy (Correia DeFigueiredo) Wilson. His family moved to the United States, Chicago, in the late 40’s. It was there that he met the love of his life, wife Kathleen J. (Morris). Desmond attended St. Benedict High School, Loyola University, and DePaul University. He was a pioneer in the field of Informational Technology/Computers holding numerous executive positions. He and his family relocated to Monroe in 1978. Desi personified the meaning of integrity, loyalty, and living a faith-filled life. Those fortunate to have known Des were blessed by his presence. He was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Parish, St. Michael’s Men, Knights of Columbus, and Rotary Club. Desmond is known for his competitive spirit and quick-witted sense of humor. He was an extraordinary woodworker, fierce on the golf course or racquetball court, and at strategizing card games. Desmond is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kathleen, daughter Beth A. DeFigueiredo, son Robert D. DeFigueiredo, granddaughter Celina M. DeFigueiredo-Dusseau, sister Marge (John) Wilson-Pasternack, brother Paul Wilson (Felicie), many nieces and nephews, and special extended family members Robert M. Ray and Harvey E.D. Dusseau. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Denis (Pat) DeFigueiredo. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 6, 2017 from 2-8p.m. in the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., Monroe, Michigan where a rosary service and celebration of life will be held that evening at 6:00 p.m. On Saturday, October 7, 2017, Desmond will lie in state at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Monroe from 10:00 a.m. until Mass of the Resurrection celebrating his life at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at a later date at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make contributions may consider a memorial scholarship being established in Desmond's name at the University of Michigan for students pursuing degrees in Urological Oncology / Neurological Disorders or to a charity of their choice.
