John Rhodes

John S. Rhodes, 91 years, of Monroe, MI went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at Magnum Care of Monroe. Born December 29, 1921 in Scott’s Hill, TN, John was the son of the late Samuel and Lillie (Thompson) Rhodes. John served his country honorably and proudly during WWII in the US Army’s 831st Amphibian Truck Company. John served from September 24, 1942 to December 28, 1945. For his heroism John received the WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, EAME Ribbon with Four Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon. On January 25, 1946 John married his beloved wife, Ruth V. Mink in Roseville, GA. The couple moved to Monroe in 1950. John was employed as a truck driver for E & L Transport Company in Dearborn and Woodhaven for 30 years. John retired in 1987. John was a member of Monroe Missionary Baptist Church and Masonic Lodge #27 F&AM. John enjoyed playing Domino’s, hunting, fishing and gardening. Most of all John enjoyed time spent with family. John is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Ruth, three loving sons James (Judy) Rhodes of LaSalle, MI, Michael (Joann) Rhodes of Monroe, MI, and Johnny (Linda) Rhodes of Carleton, MI, five cherished grandchildren: Dixie, Trina, Dawn, Jason and Heather, twelve treasured great grandchildren, a brother Bill (Evelyn) Rhodes of Lexington, TN, Three sisters: Mary Lois White of Scott’s Hill, TN, Martha Flowers of Fort Worth, TX and Carolyn (Eddie) Frazier of Monroe. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a son Kenneth Rhodes, a grandson JJ, and siblings: Eula, George, Clyde, Ernest, Ruby, Mildred, and Ruth. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 2-8 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., in Monroe, where a Masonic service will be held at 7:00 PM. Funeral services celebrating his life will be held on Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at 11:00 AM also at the funeral home. Rev. Mike Bartee and Rev. Roy Southerland will officiate. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park where the VFW Post 1138 will conduct military honor’s. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are suggested to The American Diabetes Association in care of Ideal contracting.
