John "Jack" Hohman Sr.

John A. "Jack" Hohman, Sr., 83, of Pigeon, Michigan and Stuart, Florida, formerly of Monroe, Michigan died on Oct. 18, 2016, following an 11 month illness. Jack was born on Oct. 30, 1932 in Hillsdale, Michigan to Agnes and William Hohman. He was an only child. He graduated from Hillsdale College in 1954 and also received an honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from Northwood University in 1986. While at Hillsdale, he met and became engaged to Marjorie McIntyre. They married on June 26, 1954. She survives him. Jack and Marjorie had four children, all of whom survive him: Lydia Hohman (Mark Jones) of Annapolis, MD; John Hohman, Jr (Annemarie) of Ann Arbor, MI; Michael Hohman (Sarah) of Monroe, MI, and Robert Hohman (Terri) of Pinckney, MI. Following graduation from Hillsdale, Jack worked at Monroe Auto Equipment Company. He continued to work there until his retirement in 1979. At the time he retired, Jack was a vice president of the company, and headed up the OEM sales division. In 1970 Jack joined with a few local businessmen and founded Monroe Cablevision. The Monroe cable system grew rapidly over the next ten years, and was sold to Buckeye Cable in 1980. In 1979 Jack purchased Monroe House of Travel. He continued to own and operate that business until 2009. In 1988, Jack, in partnership with his son Robert, founded Hohman Battery Supply, Inc. Besides his family, Jack’s greatest love was Northwood University. He served on its Board of Trustees from 1976 until his death. He served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for 10 years. Jack volunteered his leadership talents to many community organizations in Monroe, including the United Way of Monroe County (serving as Chair of the 1966 campaign), the Salvation Army, the Custer School Board, and as a member and past president of the Sand Point Association. Jack’s leisure interests were diverse. He was an avid golfer and boater. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was a loyal fan of all Detroit sports teams, as well as the University of Michigan. He loved to travel, and he loved to drive. Jack was a member of many clubs and organizations through the years, including Sailfish Point Country Club, Birchwood Farms Country Club, Scenic Golf and Country Club, Monroe Golf and Country Club, North Cape Yacht Club, and the Monroe Club. In addition to his wife and children, Jack is survived by eleven cherished grandchildren whom he loved spending time with: Catrin Jones, Nate Jones, Alex Jones, Riley Hohman (Kristina), Jordan Hohman (Sheena) Oliver Hohman, Andrew Hohman (Morgan) James Hohman, Steven Hohman, Robert Hohman Jr. (Rebekah) Bradley Hohman and two great grandchildren, Lilly Hohman and Robert Hohman, III. Memorial visitation for Jack will be held on Friday from 4-8 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., Monroe, MI 48161 where a memorial service celebrating Jack's life will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at 12:00 Noon. The Rev. Alice Morse, retired pastor of Trinity Episcopal Church will officiate. Private interment will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: John A. and Marjorie M.
