Harry C. Herkimer, 75 years, a lifelong resident of Monroe, Michigan, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 20, 2015 at Arbor Hospice in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Born December 26, 1939 in Monroe, Harry was the son of the late Hazen and Mildred (Steinke) Herkimer. Harry was a 1957 graduate of Monroe High School and attended both Eastern and Western Michigan Universities.
Harry married the former Karen Ann Feldkamp on June 26, 1965 in Wyandotte.
Harry owned and operated Herkimer Radio Service in Monroe since taking over the business from his father in 1963. His father started the business in 1936.
Harry was a member of the Monroe County Chamber of Commerce where he was awarded the Small Business Person of the Year in 1998 and a former member of Sertoma. For many years he volunteered his time as Camp Director for Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Harry was also a member of the Monday Night Dinner Crew. Fondly known by many as BUFF or Mr. PITA, he will be remembered as a wonderful father and grandfather who was a big teddy bear with a heart to match and whose bark was much worse than his bite. Harry enjoyed fishing and woodworking. Most of all Harry loved time spent with family, especially his grandchildren.
Harry is survived by three loving children: Jeff P. (Lois) Herkimer of Brick, NJ, Lisa A. (Dean) Walters of Monroe and Lyn A. Herkimer of Cincinnati, OH, and five cherished grandchildren: Kyle and Quinn Walters and Alexandria, Samantha, and Brad Herkimer.
In addition to his parents, Harry was preceded in death by a brother: Dr. Carl P. Herkimer.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 1 – 8 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., Monroe, MI, 48161 where funeral services celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at 10:00 AM. The Rev. Roy Southerland, pastor of Monroe Missionary Baptist Church, will officiate.
